The Six Simple Steps to Staying Safe:
1. |
When walking, stop at every curb or edge. |
2. |
Always look and listen, especially while crossing. Look left; look right; then left again, before stepping past any curb or edge. |
3. |
Always wear a helmet when riding a bike. |
4. |
Always ride in the same direction as traffic. |
5. |
Know what signs say. When walking or riding, follow all traffic signs and signals. |
6. |
When riding, always stop; look left; look right; then left again before pulling out of a driveway. |
In the U.S., in the recently passed transportation reauthorization bill (SAFETEA-LU), (August 2005) Congress created a new, Federally assisted Safe Routes to School program. The program makes available approximately $1 million to the State of Alaska in FHWA formula funds over five fiscal years for both infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects to State Departments of Transportations (DOTs). This is to implement Statewide Safe Routes to School programs for elementary and middle school children in grades K-8. The State Department of Transportation will be responsible for administering and implementing its program including criteria for selecting and awarding projects.
The State Department of Transportation is required to fund a full-time Safe Routes to School Coordinator who will serve as a central point of contact for the administration of this program. To help ensure success of this new program, the legislation also calls for the establishment of a SRTS Clearinghouse.
Visit SafeRoutesInfo.org. The Clearinghouse will play a vital role to ensure the State DOTs and others have the necessary training, tools and information needed to carry out this new program. This Request for Application is to support the SRTS Clearinghouse.
