Roadside hardware is selected, installed, and maintained in order to manage risk to the traveling public.  Acceptable performance does not guarantee safety for motorists, rather it provides an acceptable level of performance based on testing outcomes under NCHRP 230, NCHRP 350, or MASH criteria.  FHWA and AASHTO recommend in-service performance evaluation in order to best provide for acceptable performance.  The following guides may be used to supplement manufacturer recommendations in the selection, installation and maintenance of roadside hardware in accordance with industry practice.
