Anchorage International Airport Police and Fire Achieves National Law Enforcement Accreditation by CALEA®

(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) – The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport Police and Fire Department proudly announces its continued accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) in the Law Enforcement agency program. This prestigious recognition was reaffirmed on March 23, 2024, following a comprehensive assessment process.
Receiving accreditation from CALEA signifies the highest standards of professionalism and commitment to public safety upheld by the ANC Airport Police Department. The department first earned this distinction in 2020 and has since maintained its dedication to excellence in law enforcement practices.

Chief Aaron Danielson and Lieutenant Dan Juarez represented the ANC Airport Police Department at the CALEA conference held in Montgomery, Alabama. The rigorous evaluation included an in-depth examination of community engagement, policies, procedures, equipment, and facilities by CALEA assessors. Following this assessment, the agency's performance was reviewed by CALEA's 21-member Board of Commissioners, culminating in the reaffirmation of its accreditation status.

During the conference, CALEA President Marcus Brown and Executive Director Craig Hartley presented the ANC Airport Police Department with its accreditation, recognizing the department's unwavering commitment to public safety and community service.
Chief Danielson expressed gratitude for the department's recognition, stating, "It is an honor to see the professional actions of our officers and policy standards of our department be recognized through CALEA reaccreditation. Our department's dedication to public safety is continually practiced day in and day out. The diligence of our officers and staff to meet these standards is commendable and a worthy resource to our aviation community and the State of Alaska."

Established in 1979, CALEA was founded by major law enforcement organizations, including the International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, National Sheriffs' Association, and the Police Executive Research Forum. The Commission develops standards based on international best practices in public safety and administers the accreditation process to ensure agencies meet the highest standards of professionalism and service delivery.

ANC Takes Flight With Four New Routes Summer 2024

(Anchorage, Alaska) – Alaskans will have more options to travel this summer with the addition of four new routes for the 2024 summer schedule. Among these routes are three brand new destinations: John F. Kennedy International Airport, serving the New York City area; Washington Dulles International Airport, catering to the D.C. metro and northern Virginia region; and San Diego International Airport, connecting southern California. Alaska Airlines will operate direct flights to JFK Airport and San Diego from May to August, while United will operate direct flights to Dulles Airport from May to September. Additionally, Delta is bringing back its seasonal summer flight to Detroit, operating from June to September.

"We are excited to be launching the first ever nonstop flights between Anchorage and Washington DC this summer – building easier access to the nation's capital and even greater connectivity to East Coast and Transatlantic destinations," said Ben Sanchez, Managing Director of Domestic Planning at United Airlines. United Airlines Expands Summer Seasonal Service to Alaska with New Routes from Fairbanks and Anchorage International Airports

ANC Prepares for Summer Travel

April 12, 2023 (ANCHORAGE, AK) – The tourists are coming! Despite all the snow still on the ground, preparations for the busy summer travel season are already underway. United Airlines added two non-stop flights to Chicago daily at the beginning of April, to join its year-round service to Denver. United Airlines will start its full summer schedule of destinations to Newark, Houston, and San Francisco early June.

The first week in May American Airlines returns to ANC with non-stop flights to Dallas/Ft. Worth and Chicago. Air Canada will also return with non-stop flights to Vancouver, BC Canada the first week in May.

The middle of May brings more Delta Air Lines non-stop service to Seattle, Minneapolis, and Atlanta, as well as increased hours of operation for its pop-up Airline Lounge on ANC's mezzanine level.

By the beginning of June, Sun Country Air will provide non-stop service to Minneapolis. Eurowings Discover and Condor, both offering direct, non-stop flights to Frankfurt, Germany, will come to ANC twice a week. Eurowings Discover and Condor will have passenger check-in and departures from the South Terminal, but arrivals will occur at ANC's North Terminal. (Condor has a third weekly flight that will go to Fairbanks before it flies to Frankfurt, which will arrive and depart from North Terminal.)

ANC also looks forward to Alaska Airlines ramping up its service frequencies, including the new non-stop route to Paine Field, in Everett, Washington.

ANC Third Busiest in the World for Cargo in 2022

April 5, 2023 (ANCHORAGE, AK) – The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) surpassed Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG) to claim the slot for third busiest airport in the world for Cargo. In 2022, 3,461,603 metric tons of cargo transited ANC's runways. The rankings of airports are conducted by the Airport Council International World.

"ANC is committed to continue serving as one the busiest cargo airports in the world through maintaining positive relationships with our partnering stakeholders around our airport," said Craig Campbell, ANC Airport Director. "Responsible growth and development are occurring to allow ANC to keep up with the demands of the aviation industry. We are an important part of the world's economy, as the designation of third busiest signifies."

"This announcement demonstrates that the Anchorage International Airport is becoming an even stronger player in Alaska's economy, supporting many other logistics and aviation-related businesses throughout our state," said Governor Mike Dunleavy. "Our international airport system communicates to the world that we are open and ready for business."

The announcement of airport rankings was made through a press release sent out by Airport Council International World.

ANC South Terminal Parking Garage Partial Closure

Summer 2023 renovations will temporarily reduce parking capacity

March 1, 2023 (ANCHORAGE, Alaska) –  Beginning March 20, ANC parking capacity will be reduced by approximately half. The South Terminal Parking Garage, built in the mid-1980s, will be partially closed for the duration of summer to accommodate construction. This means that parking will be exceedingly limited. Structural restoration, asphalt replacement and re-striping must be completed on the approximately 50-year-old structure. No previous upgrades or major maintenance have occurred since the garage was constructed.

Travelers should allot extra time if they need to utilize parking at the airport. ANC encourages travelers to have plan for drop off or pick up in lieu of using the South Terminal parking garage. On site, other parking options include the North Terminal parking lot, the South Terminal Long-term parking lot and the Park, Ride & Fly, which provides shuttle. Off-site businesses that provide parking and shuttle services should also be considered as an alternative. Other pick-up plans could include people waiting at nearby restaurants, or the cellphone lot, for their traveler to arrive and collect their baggage.

"Summer construction is both necessary and unavoidable," said Megan Peters, ANC Communications Coordinator. "ANC is attempting to make the parking situation as manageable as possible. We ask for patience while this critical rehabilitation construction is underway and that motorists take their time and follow all informational construction signs."

On March 20, 2023, barricades will be placed to stop vehicles from parking on levels 3 & 4. All vehicles must vacate levels 3 & 4 by March 31, 2023, at 11:59 pm. Beginning April 1, any remaining vehicles shall be towed. When work is completed for levels 3 & 4, levels 1 & 2 will undergo the same renovations.

Any vehicles that are towed will be relocated to another parking area at ANC. Motorists looking for their vehicle moved due to the construction, or any other parking issue, can call Republic Parking at 907-677-1074.

2022 Asian Freight, Logistics, and Supply Chain Awards: ANC Best Airport in North America

September 16, 2022 (ANCHORAGE, Alaska) – Ted Steven Anchorage International Airport is the 2022 Best Airport in North America according to the freight and logistics heavy weights operating international businesses in Asia and the Pacific. The award was announced at the Asian Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain (AFLAS) Award ceremony this week.

ANC is the fourth busiest cargo airport in the world, second busiest in North America, handling approximately 3.6 million metric tons of air cargo in 2021.

"Our airport is consistently ranked among the best of the best," said Craig Campbell, ANC Airport Director. "Our international customers recognize not just our prime location, 9.5 hours away from 90% of the industrial world, they appreciate the services ANC provides—from our ever-open runways to the cleanliness of our facilities. We also recognize that our business partners, such as the capable ground handlers and fuel operators, make sure that all the carriers can stay punctual with their busy schedules. This award acknowledges each company and individual that works to keep ANC open for business year-round."

ANC previously won the award in 2019 and was a finalist for the award in 2020, as well.

Float Plane Crashed into Lake Hood Following Takeoff

ANC Airport Police and Fire Credits Good Samaritans in Rescue

July 26, 2022 (ANCHORAGE, Alaska) – ANC's Airport Police and Fire Department responded to a float plane crash today in Lake Hood at approximately 0918 hours. The Regal Air aircraft (tail number N9776R) was conducting a water takeoff at Lake Hood when, according to the pilot, a strong crosswind caused the right wing to rise after the plane was airborne. While the pilot attempted to make corrections, the plane crashed in the water adjacent to the commercial finger of Lake Hood Seaplane Base, approximately 10 feet from the shoreline. Upon impact with the water, the aircraft sustained significant damage and was partially submerged. Anchorage Tower observed the crash and immediately activated the airport crash line. Airport Police and Fire responded with multiple police and fire units, including a rescue boat. Anchorage Fire Department units arrived on scene a short time later and provided mutual aid serving as primary EMS care and patient transport. Seven people were on board the aircraft, including the pilot. All seven were accounted for and transported to area hospitals to be evaluated and treated for their injuries. Following the rescue effort, airport maintenance launched its small vessel to place booms in the water around the plane for environmental protection. NTSB is investigating the circumstances of the wreck and has approved for the aircraft to be removed from the water. Lake Hood is open for aircraft operations as the aircraft removal from the water is ongoing.

"The Airport Police and Fire would like to thank several good Samaritans that witnessed the crash and rendered immediate aid to the victims," said ANC Airport Police and Fire Chief Aaron Danielson. "We are certain their quick actions to help the victims from the water assisted with the quick triage and medical care before they were transported for further medical aid."

Federal Grant to Fund Gate B9 Passenger Boarding Bridge Replacement

July 14, 2022 (ANCHORAGE, Alaska) – Recently, the federal government announced that Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport received a $2,432,000 grant through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law's Airport Terminal Program. ANC is happy to accept the grant as it allows us to make a critical infrastructure upgrade. The funding will be put to use to replace the Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB) at gate B9 at the end of the B concourse.

The current B9 PBB is the oldest in the South Terminal. Many of the parts for it are now obsolete, which makes it challenging to conduct repairs on the infrastructure. The older model in place also does not have certain automated features, bumpers and motion alarms that help keep ground handlers and equipment safe. These modern features reduce the risk of damage to planes and the infrastructure. Additionally, the new infrastructure will be more suitable to extreme weather conditions that occur in Alaska.

"This upgrade provides a distinct safety and operational enhancement to airport operations," said Craig Campbell, ANC Airport Director. "The South Terminal B concourse is heavily utilized in the summertime when passenger airline service is at its peak. When a PBB malfunctions, it reduces the number of gates available for planes to off load passengers, resulting in potential longer than usual waits for planes on the airfield and creates an inconvenience to passengers.  We greatly appreciate the support of our congressional delegation in securing the funding to allow us to make this necessary improvement."

The old B9 gate can potentially be stored and reinstalled at a different location of ANC that is not as regularly utilized as the B concourse. ANC plans on putting the project out to bid this fall. Construction will be scheduled for Summer 2023.

ANC Welcomes New Carrier Eurowings Discover

Friday, June 10, 2022 (Anchorage, AK) – Friday, June 10, 2022 (Anchorage, AK) – Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) welcomes Eurowings Discover to our airport on Monday, June 13 at 1:35pm. Eurowings Discovers inaugural flight will bring in upward of 150 passengers. Currently, three flights using wide-bodied planes are schedule per week over the course of summer. Each flight has the potential to bring 270 passengers to Alaska.

Alaska International Airports Receive National Recognition For Snow & Ice Control

May 5, 2022 (ANCHORAGE, Alaska) –The Northeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives (NEC AAAE) announced this week that Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) and Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) received Balchen Post Awards for excellence in the performance of snow and ice control. ANC won first place in the large airport category and FAI earned an honorable mention in the medium airport category.

NEC AAAE, formed in 1957, promotes airport-related leadership, management and growth and is comprised of airport-related professionals including management, vendors, consultants, and suppliers.

FAI saw an accumulation of 91.9 inches of snow in the winter of 2021-2022. While the area experienced several heavy snow falls, the most challenging was a two-week weather event from Dec. 24 through Jan. 6. Fairbanks experienced several back-to-back weather patterns, i.e.; rapidly warming temperatures combined with heavy snowfall, followed by freezing rain, heavy snowfall, strong winds and temperatures dropping down to 40°F. 

Rachel Webb, Chief of Operations at Fairbanks International Airport said, "Fairbanks Operations and Maintenance personnel work incredibly hard during a typical winter. The 21/22 season was like no other, requiring long hours, difficult decisions, and seemingly endless storms.  I am proud to be part of such a dedicated and professional team."

ANC received 89.3 inches of snow this winter, more than 13 inches above average.

"ANC and much of Alaska experienced severe ice storms in late December," said Zaramie Lindseth, ANC Airfield Maintenance Manager. "The events were significant enough to shatter historical records in terms of deicing products used to keep ANC open and operational.  Our ANC team performed exceptionally well during this difficult winter and demonstrated why they are the best in the industry."

Fairbanks typically has long periods of subzero temperatures, allowing time between weather events to remove snow and work on surface areas. This year's winter season required many snow removal operators to work numerous days without a break. The commitment to the airport and the traveling public is likely one of the many reasons that this team was recognized for this prestigious award. 

Jason Jacobs, FAI Chief of Maintenance said, "I am proud of the maintenance department and the entire FAI team who dedicate themselves to ensuring the airport remains safely open. This team has earned this recognition and they embody the department's mission to Keep Alaska Moving."

ANC Plans Temporary Traffic Pattern to Accommodate Construction Outside the South Terminal

Those picking up passengers should use cell phone lot to wait until passengers are ready for pick up

March 25, 2022 (ANCHORAGE, Alaska) – Beginning next week, on March 30, the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) terminal loop road in front of the South Terminal will undergo significant and critical rehabilitation. Upon project completion, the terminal loop road, outside of the lower-level baggage claim area, will have new pavement and drainage systems, upgraded curbside pedestrian access complying with FAA/ADA terminal requirements, and new lighting and paint.

During the initial phase of construction, which will conclude May 25, all three lower level traffic lanes nearest to the terminal outside the baggage claim area will be rerouted to the outer traffic lanes. To guide traffic, ANC is installing detour signage along the roadway, and flaggers may be present. Temporary signage will be also placed throughout the interior of the terminal instructing arriving passengers to appropriate pick-up areas for regular pickup, commercial transportation and tour busses. Airport staff is also diligently notifying ANC tenants to provide them with the information and instruction they need to keep all operations uninterrupted and running smoothly.

"Alaskans are all too familiar with the fact that important construction upgrades beget detours and traffic congestion," said Craig Campbell, Interim ANC Airport Director. "I want to thank motorists in advance for their patience and understanding when coming to the airport. We will move quickly to get the majority of the terminal loop road back to normal before our busy summer season kicks off Memorial Weekend."

ANC asks travelers to arrive at the airport two hours prior to their flight's scheduled departure. Drivers picking up passengers are advised to use the cellphone lot and wait until your passenger is ready at the curb with their luggage. This will help alleviate any issues curbside. Intermittent lane closures will occur from Memorial Day through the summer to complete the terminal loop project.

Two Airlines Joining ANC for Summer 2022 Season

More opportunities for Alaskans and tourists seeking summer adventure

February 24, 2022 (Anchorage, AK) – The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) is welcoming two additional airlines to its summer lineup. Flair and Eurowings Discovery will begin operating in May, joining the returning international airlines Air Canada, Icelandair, Yakutia Airlines, and Condor.

Flair and Air Canada will enplane and deplane from South Terminal. Yakutia will utilize the North Terminal at ANC for all their incoming and outgoing flights. Icelandair, Condor and Eurowings Discovery will use the South Terminal for enplaning but their arriving passengers will deplane and clear immigration and customs at the North Terminal. Any traveler needing to catch a connecting domestic flight can gain easy transport to the South Terminal by shuttle or take advantage of the indoor connector hallway between the Terminals.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities oversees 237 airports, 10 ferries serving 35 communities along 3,500 of marine miles, over 5,600 miles of highway and 776 public facilities throughout the state of Alaska. ANC sees 93% Increase in Passenger Traffic and 14% Increase in Air Cargo Volumes in 2021

Feb. 4, 2022 (Anchorage, AK) – In 2021, travelers passed through the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) in droves. More than 4.5 million people traversed the terminals demonstrating a strong return to regular air travel. Approximately two million more passengers passed through ANC, a 93% increase from 2020. ANC expects travel to further rebound in 2022. As of now, summer seat capacity in the Anchorage market is 6% higher than pre-pandemic summer of 2019.

"Alaskan tourism businesses welcomed the increase in travelers to Alaska and the positive impact their visits had on our tourism industry and the economy after tourism across the globe was at a standstill in 2020," said Governor Mike Dunleavy. "The State partnered with the tourism industry in early 2021 to market Alaska as a COVID-safe destination. The 93 percent increase in travelers over 2020 shows how strongly our great state resonates with visitors eager to travel. Last December, my administration announced a second grant to the recovering $4.5 billion Alaska tourism industry, so we anticipate moving beyond recovery and onto a banner tourism season this summer."  

ANC's international non-stops are back for summer 2022; Air Canada-Vancouver, Canada; Icelandair-Reykjavik, Iceland; Yakutia Airlines-Petropavlovsk, Russia; and Condor-Frankfurt, Germany. Additionally, Eurowings Discovery will be a new airline at ANC this summer, offering additional non-stop service between Frankfurt, Germany. The Frankfurt airport offers easy connections to markets throughout Europe and large markets in Africa.      

Air Cargo Sets Another Record

ANC, handled approximately 3.6 million metric tons of air cargo in 2021, breaking its record for cargo volume by 14%, or just over 400,000 metric tons. The previous record was set in 2020.

"For the second year in a row, ANC is seeing record volumes of air cargo. ANC is a critical hub for the world's economic growth. As air cargo continues to grow, ANC is working with the private sector to provide the infrastructure necessary to capture transpacific growth. This growth will only add to the exiting economic activity and jobs that ANC provides for Alaskans," said Szczesniak. "Our airport will continue to attract business and strengthen Alaska's economy." 

Anchorage is strategically located between the world's two largest economies and a 9.5-hour flight from 90% of the industrialized world. ANC is home to hubs for UPS and FedEx and has five major cargo expansion projects in development.

Holiday Travel at ANC

Nov. 23, 2021 (ANCHORAGE, Alaska) – Airline travel is taking off for the holiday season! This means crowds of people in the airport and on planes. To avoid frustration, the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) encourages travelers to be prepared and practice patience.

The predicted increase of passenger numbers inevitably brings longer lines at check in and security and more congestion at curb drop off and pick up. Please help keep traffic flowing by using the parking garage (first 30 minutes are free) or the free parking at the cell phone lot (off Aviation Avenue next to the "Upside Down" building) while waiting for your family or friends to collect their luggage and prepare for pick up at the curb.

At no time should vehicles wait on the side of the road heading into the airport. Idling vehicles will not be allowed to wait at passenger pickup unless someone is actively loading. Idling drivers will be directed to circle around or wait in the designated parking areas.

To avoid congestion inside the airport at luggage drop off through security, travelers are encouraged to check the status of their flights well before it is set to take off and to plan to be at ANC at least two hours before departure.

"More and more people are comfortable with returning to their pre-COVID-19 travel habits, which includes visiting friends and family over the holidays," said Airport Manager Jim Szczesniak. "At ANC we welcome the returning crowds and wish everyone healthy and safe travels from Thanksgiving through New Year."

ANC Sees Record 3rd Quarter Air Cargo Volumes Announces New Transpacific Shipping Method to Reduce Port Congestion

Nov. 16, 2021 (ANCHORAGE, Alaska) – Record air cargo volumes continue to come through the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC), surpassing previously record-breaking volumes from the first half of this year. As of the end of the third quarter, ANC welcomed 917,753 metric tons of air cargo, which was a 5.62% increase compared to the third quarter of 2020.

Cargo increases are expected to reach new heights as ANC is a strategically located international hub with a robust airline network and special air cargo transfer rights. The steady influx of cargo to ANC's airfield brings with it economic benefits and an increase of job opportunities for Alaskans.

"We are thrilled that air cargo growth continues to highlight the critical role ANC plays in the global supply chain," said Airport Director Jim Szczesniak. "ANC is the future nexus of the transpacific shipping method."

ANC also announced that an air cargo shipping study, done in partnership with the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation (AEDC), was recently completed. ANC Pacific Air-to-Sea Service (ANC PASS) is a completely new shipping method that can help alleviate current bottlenecks in the supply chain. ANC PASS works by combining ANC's air cargo network and the backhaul capacity of ships servicing the Port of Alaska.

"Most of the goods consumed in Alaska are shipped up from the Port of Tacoma. The containers and trailers that bring goods to Alaska mostly go back empty. Every week 151 Boeing 747s worth of empty trailers and containers leave Anchorage. ANC PASS provides an opportunity to inject more capacity into the supply chain and allows airlines to better utilize their scarce aircraft. For example, a typical Asia-Anchorage-Chicago round trip could be done three times per week and inject 300 tons of cargo into the supply chain. An Asia-Anchorage round trip, with items transferred to ship, could be done six times per week and inject 600 tons of cargo into the supply chain," said Szczesniak.

The ANC PASS study was conducted between 11 points of origin in Asia, four west coast ports, and seven U.S. destinations using a variety of freight classes. The study shows that cargo from Asia can be injected into the west coast distribution facilities in as little as six to seven days, with the worst-case scenario being 15 to 19 days. The shipping lines servicing Alaska have their own facilities in Tacoma and are not subject to delays due to dock waiting times. 

"ANC PASS is more than an immediate congestion relief valve, it is an entirely new shipping method. ANC PASS can offer shippers a medium speed, medium cost transpacific option. This has great potential to increase air cargo traffic through ANC by taking share from traditional ocean carriers," said Szczesniak. "It also works in reverse, providing North American shippers a way to take advantage of the backhaul capacity to Asia on the cargo aircraft that depart from ANC."

ANC Passenger Numbers for Summer 2021 Were Strong

Nov. 1, 2021 (ANCHORAGE, Alaska) – The summer numbers are in.  Passenger travel to the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) continued its climb back to pre-pandemic levels. For the summer of 2021, May through September, 877,351 more passengers passed through ANC when compared to last year.  Assuming most of the increase in passenger traffic was due to increased tourism and a typical tourist spends $1,600 in Alaska on their vacation, additional tourists passing through ANC injected more than $1 billion dollars into Alaska's economy. 

"The tourism industry and our airline partners understood that Alaska is a highly desired destination for travelers. ANC worked very hard and proudly did our part to secure that much needed air service, which keeps Alaska's economy moving in the right direction," stated Jim Szczesniak, ANC airport manager. "Each tourist that comes into Alaska injects money directly into Alaska's economy- that is money spent on hotels, restaurants, rental cars, excursions and more.  Money that helps keep Alaskan businesses strong."

The influx of flights also adds more jobs at the airport, from baggage handlers and ticketing agents to heavy equipment operators and mechanics. Job opportunities at ANC are steady, reliable and diverse. Every person working at ANC contributes to its success of drawing in tourists and catering to Alaskans that come and go.

"It's encouraging to see such a strong return of travelers to provide much needed relief to Alaska's tourism industry," said Governor Mike Dunleavy. "With a full cruise season expected next year and the return of international air travel, the future is looking good for Alaska's tourism industry."

ANC sees record cargo volumes and a rebound in passenger traffic in first half of 2021

(Anchorage, ALASKA) – The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) experienced record air cargo volumes during the first half of 2021 and saw a strong recovery in passenger traffic.

Between January and June, 1.73 million metric tons of air cargo transited ANC, a 23.45% increase over the first half of 2020.

"E-commerce 'tech-celeration,' port delays and low product inventories are causing a significant increase in air cargo activity. Our central location on the trans-Pacific trade lane, coupled with our efficient infrastructure and special transfer rights, have resulted in greater utilization of ANC by shippers to maximize their air-cargo potential," said Jim Szczesniak, the Anchorage Airport Director. "We are seeing a continued shift in supply chains from periodic, container-sized shipments via ocean cargo to more regular, pallet-sized shipments via air cargo. With more than $1 billion in private sector cargo developments in the pipeline at ANC, we expect this growth trajectory to continue."

According to Szczesniak, passenger traffic has begun to rebound at ANC, with passenger traffic up more than 348%, an increase of 439,000 passengers over the same period in 2020. Compared to 2019, ANC has recaptured 83% of its pre-pandemic passenger traffic.   

"Governor Dunleavy recognized the severe impact COVID-19 had on Alaska's tourism industry and allocated funds to market Alaska this summer. This wise investment has provided excellent returns," said Szczesniak. "A large percentage of the recaptured 439,000 passengers are tourists, who spend an average of $1,600 or more while visiting. That means approximately $500 million or more for Alaska's economy so far this summer."  

ANC is expecting continued strength in air cargo and passenger traffic numbers for the remainder of the year, with air cargo about to enter its peak season and passenger seat forecasts for September to the end of the year up 1.7% over 2019.

"It's encouraging to see a passenger seat forecast for this fall and winter higher than 2019. With additional attractions at our local ski resorts, and the northern lights season coming, we hope Anchorage can continue to wow more tourists through the shoulder and winter seasons and keep the momentum going," said Szczesniak. 

ANC adds new upgrades to enhance customer experience

Anchorage, ALASKA – The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) has recently added upgrades to its terminals to make travelers' time at the airport more pleasurable. The upgrades are targeted to segments of the traveling public who have special needs.

"ANC's motto is World Class, World Close. We can't be world class if we don't provide a world-class experience for all travelers. These new upgrades are designed to assist the disabled traveler with a service animal, travelers who need privacy for breastfeeding, and children on the autism spectrum who find the general terminal environment overstimulating," said Jim Szczesniak, the Anchorage Airport Director.

The new upgrades include:

Service Animal Relief Area (SARA)

SARAs are located in both the South and North terminals. The South Terminal one is located in the B Concourse near gate B4. The North Terminal SARA is located near gate N8. The SARAs have artificial grass, waste disposal materials, and washup sinks.

Lactation Suites

New lactation suites are located in both the South and North terminals. The South Terminal suite is located in Concourse C between gate C5 and C6. The North Terminal lactation is located near gate N8. The suites include a locking door, a comfortable chair, electrical outlets, a changing table, and a sink.

Sensory Friendly Family Room

The South Terminal family room was upgraded to provide a calming environment for children on the autism spectrum who find the airport environment overstimulating.

"The hustle and bustle of the terminal can be overwhelming for travelers on the autism spectrum. With its soft light and calming paint color, the upgraded family room offers a quiet area to decompress," said Szczesniak.

Outdoor Gate Area

The new outdoor gate area is located just outside of the Alaska Airlines baggage claim area on the ground level. It features a park-like setting, Wi-Fi, and widely spaced seating. 

"ANC has implemented a number of changes to ensure the terminal environment inhibits the spread of COVID-19. ANC's terminal air quality is close to outdoor air; however, some travelers are still uncomfortable in the terminal environment. ANC wanted to offer travelers an option to wait in the fresh air instead of in a gate hold area. For travelers who arrive early this is a nice option," Szczesniak said.

ANC soars to world's fourth busiest cargo airport in 2020

Sees significant growth in first quarter of 2021

04/25/2021 Anchorage, ALASKA – The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) is the fourth busiest cargo airport in world.
Governor Mike Dunleavy said, "Alaska is open for business and with nearly $1 billion of developments planned for ANC, we expect this economic hub for the state to keep growing."

Nearly 3.16 million metric tons of cargo—a 15% increase from the previous year—propelled ANC from the world's sixth busiest cargo airport in 2019 to No. 4 in 2020.

Airports Council International reports, globally, the air cargo industry decreased by 8.9% in 2020. However, cargo volumes for the world's top 10 airports grew by 3%.

"ANC is a critical link in the global supply chain, and shippers are realizing the time and money saved by utilizing our airport." said Airport Director Jim Szczesniak.

ANC connects the world's two largest economies and has daily freighter service to more than 30 markets, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, New York, Miami, Atlanta, Guadalajara, Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul, Hong Kong… Freighters from ANC serve an additional 20 markets with at least weekly service.

"At a time when PPE, and e-commerce are more important than ever, and the West Coast port congestion has degraded supply chains, ANC has risen to meet demands for the movement of goods throughout the pandemic," Szczesniak said.

ANC is poised to have another solid year of cargo volume, registering a 40% increase in Q1 of this year compared to Q1 of 2020.
