University Avenue Rehabilitation and Widening Project
The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities, Northern Region, plans to construct the first segment of the
University Avenue Rehabilitation & Widening project in 2015. Work will include replacing the Chena River bridge, reconstructing University
Avenue between the Chena River State Recreation Site former entrance and Thomas Street, and extending Halverson Road. Reconstruction activities
will include a continuous raised median on University Avenue, the addition of shoulders which will be striped as bike lanes, improvements to the
University Avenue/Johansen/Geist and signalization of the University/Sandvik intersection, as well as construction of pedestrian/bicycle facilities
along the segment length.

Construct Segment 1 |
Construction of Segments 2 – 4 will be dependent on available funding. Segments 2 and 3 consist of reconstructing
University Avenue from the former Chena River State Recreation Site to the Mitchell Expressway. Segment 4 will construct a railroad
overpass to eliminate the at-grade crossing on University Avenue. For additional information regarding the segments, see the
