3rd Street Widening Project Project No. MGL-M-067(1)/62541
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is developing plans to
improve and widen the 3rd Street corridor between the Old Steese Highway and Hamilton Avenue in Fairbanks,
AK. Proposed improvements include additional through traffic lanes, exclusive right and left-turn lanes at
intersections, and existing signal improvements. In addition, west and eastbound bus pullouts will be
provided to facilitate public transportation. The purpose of the proposed improvements is to decrease delay
by improving traffic flow and safety for motorized and non-motorized users.
Design and engineering support is being provided by USKH Inc. The DOT&PF is currently in the
process of reviewing plans and right of way needs for the preferred design alternative. The preferred
design alternative was selected through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) public process.
The Environmental Document and Federal Highways Finding of No Significant Impact can be found on this site.
The DOT&PF is acquiring professional services to produce Plans, Specifications, and Estimates
for building demolitions. Following completion of the right-of-way process, building demolition, and Final
Plans; the tentative construction date is 2014.
