About TDP What are Temperature Data Probes? Measurement Research Corporation (MRC) manufactures Temperature Data Probes (TDP). Temperature readings are taken at several points along a 72 inch vertical probe that is located just under the road pavement. The probe is made up of 16 thermistors encased in an epoxy. Temperatures are recorded at the pavement surface, just under the pavement, every 3 inches for the first foot, and every 6 inches for the next five feet. |
What are the Temperature Data Probes used for? The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities - Highway Data Section collects temperature data and traffic volume, class, and weight data at 34 locations around the state. Temperature recordings are taken hourly. The data is used for road design, setting weight restriction on roads, and research. Weight restrictions become necessary in the spring and fall when the ground is thawing and freezing. A layer of water collects between the pavement and the frozen ground beneath it, causing the roadbed to become less stable. |
