Fairbanks International Airport Launches New Program

(FAIRBANKS, Alaska) — Today Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) became the fourth of a dozen U.S. airports testing a new system of notifying pilots about a variety of potential ground and in-flight challenges.

The program changes the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) system used by the federal government to allow for near real-time distribution of information directly to pilots.  “The new system involves conversion to a web-based mechanism to communicate with pilots,” Operations Officer Melissa Osborn said. “The primary benefit is it allows airport operations to report conditions directly to the NOTAM system and in doing so, allow for instant dissemination of critical information to pilots and other users.” Osborn added, “There are potentially hundreds of uses for this system, for example, reporting changing airfield conditions during inclement weather.”

Luiken Chosen as DOT&PF Deputy Commissioner of Aviation

(JUNEAU, Alaska) – Marc Luiken has been appointed to serve as Deputy Commissioner of Aviation for the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) effective today.

Luiken, a recently retired U.S. Air Force colonel, was selected for the position by DOT&PF Commissioner Leo von Scheben. Luiken’s selection follows his distinguished military career spanning almost 30 years.

The colonel is a 1981 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he received his commission.

Melissa Osborn, Fairbanks International Airport Operations Officer, Earns Prestigious Certification

(FAIRBANKS, Alaska) — Fairbanks International Airport announces that Melissa Osborn, Airport Operations Officer, successfully completed the Airport Certified Employee (ACE) program for operations personnel. Melissa is the first and only Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) employee to have ever successfully attained ACE certification.

ACE Operations is a comprehensive certification program sponsored by the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE). Geared toward public use airports such as FAI, ACE teaches Federal Aviation Administration Part 139 curriculum designed to educate and challenge airport personnel with airfield operations responsibilities.Certification requires successful passage of a grueling 100 question written final exam.

“We’re extremely proud of Melissa for her dedication and hard work in attaining this certification. It’s very impressive,” noted Jesse VanderZanden, C.M., airport manager. “It demonstrates our level of commitment to safety and professionalism in serving the traveling public.”

Public-private partnership brings new flight to Fairbanks

(FAIRBANKS, Alaska) — A federal grant administered by the state Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development is bringing increased travel options to and from Fairbanks International Airport.

The airport was among the recipients of a 2006 Small Community Air Service Development grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. These grants are designed to increase air service in communities throughout the country. The Fairbanks grant will allow Denver-based Frontier Airlines to provide seasonal nonstop service between Denver and Fairbanks, four times a week during the summer months, with the goal of building year-round traffic.

“We are pleased to have been a part of the public-private partnership that brought this route to Alaska,” said Emil Notti, commissioner of the state Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development.

(JUNEAU, Alaska) — Jesse VanderZanden, Fairbanks International Airport manager, and John Johansen, Engineering, Environmental and Planning Manager at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, recently earned the Certified Member designation from the American Association of Airport Executives.

To earn this designation, candidates must demonstrate an in depth knowledge in a wide range of airport-related topics including management, Federal Aviation Administration and Transportation Security Administration regulatory requirements, property management and environmental regulations.

World’s Largest Aircraft to Land at Fairbanks International Airport

(FAIRBANKS, Alaska) - The world’s largest commercial cargo aircraft, the Ukrainian-registered Antonov AN 225, will stop at Fairbanks International Airport Tuesday at 10 a.m., and depart at midnight.

The aircraft is arriving from Narita, Japan and departing to Miami en route Port-au-Prince, Haiti, carrying more than 250,000 pounds of earthquake disaster relief equipment.
