A Controlled One-Lane Tunnel with Alternating Train and Vehicle Use

Vehicles wait in a staging area at each end until a scheduled departure at fifteen minute intervals.  For freezing temperatures and fixed winter openings, travel is limited to a five minute window. Vehicles must be in line before that time.


SUMMER TUNNEL SCHEDULE

May 1 to September 30: Open daily 5:30 am to 11:15 pm

Please Note: The "Walk To Whittier" is back for 2012!
The walk will take place on Sunday, June 17th and
the tunnel will close to vehicular traffic from 1:30 pm until 3:00 pm.
People interested in the walk can call the Alaska Chapter of the March of Dimes,
or the Greater Whittier Chamber of Commerce for further information about the event.

Traffic starts at 5:30 a.m., continuing until 11:15 p.m. during the summer, accommodating vehicles most of the time.

Unscheduled trains using the tunnel in addition to the regularly scheduled passenger trains may cause occasional 15 to 30 minute delays. Please plan with this possibility in mind.

*Oversize vehicles are allowed only on Monday through Thursday at these times. See the link: Vehicle Size, Tunnel Restrictions for limitations.

Motorcycle helmets must be worn in the tunnel, and convertible vehicles must have the top in place.

PLEASE HELP TO FACILITATE THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC. PLEASE PLAN TO ARRIVE AT THE STAGING AREA TEN MINUTES BEFORE THE SCHEDULED OPENING.

During periods of temperatures 32 F or below, the tunnel will be opened for the last 5 minutes of the scheduled opening.
