The Valdez Halibut Derby features a $15,000 cash Grand Prize for the largest halibut, $5,000 cash for 2nd place and $2,000 for 3rd place. In addition to weekly prizes, all anglers who purchase a derby ticket have a chance to win a 4x4 F-150 Truck.

Visit Valdez for the Silver Salmon Derby. Fishing for silvers in Valdez is a great sport. With the Solomon Gulch Hatchery releasing millions of coho fry each year, the silvers swim right past Valdez and are fairly easy to catch either from shore or by trolling by boat.

Visit Juneau for Beat the Odds Women's Race Against Cancer, sponsored by Cancer Connection. Distances: 2 mile walk or 5K run. Starts at 9am at the Riverbend Elementary School covered playground. Ladies only; fundraiser for breast cancer awareness. Companion event for men on the same date.

Visit Seldovia for the Craft Invitational Chainsaw Carving Competition. If you've never seen chainsaw carving, this is an event you won't want to miss. Carvers will have over 25 hours of carving time to create their one-of-a-kind masterpiece carvings. The MV Tustumena schedule allows for participants and observers to travel between Homer and Seldovia for this amazing event.

Visit Cordova for the Fungus Festival. Throughout this three day event, attendees will have opportunities to learn more about local mushrooms, participate in mushroom related arts and crafts, and celebrate mushrooms and other wild harvested foods in a Wild Food Dinner. There will be daily guided forays, an identification table and an expert key note speaker. Bring your cameras and rain gear and join in the fun.

Skagway

Visit Skagway for the Klondike International Road Relay. This 110 mile relay race begins in Skagway, Alaska on Friday evening and continues all night along the Klondike Highway. It ends in Whitehorse, Yukon on Saturday afternoon. Teams of 10 members from all over the world compete in this event, and special ferry service is provided between Juneau and Skagway.

Bellingham

The Bellingham Traverse is a multi-sport event for solo, tandem and relay teams. The event has a strong salmon theme running through it. Participants, aka Spawners, are encouraged to “Think Like Fish” as they go through the course. This is a community event that displays a wide range of athletic abilities from the hard-core to those out in costumes just for fun. The public is encouraged to come out and cheer on the Spawners.

Get ready for winter and visit Juneau for Discover Eaglecrest Day. It's a great time to get your 2014-15 Eaglecrest Season Pass, Multi-Visit Card, and Snowsports School products at pre-season prices. Events are scheduled from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Enjoy the Alpine Barbeque and Beer Garden. Take a free spin on the Porcupine Chairlift or an Alaska Zipline tour at a special rate. Take in the final stages of the Juneau Freewheelers Mountain Bike Tour of Eaglecrest. Children of all ages will enjoy the Decomposition Decathalon (noon to 3pm) with fun, interactive events and storytime (11am to 3pm) with stories featuring winter sports and activities.
